Mackies maker ramps up growth with popcorn purchase

Popcorn getting made

Taylors Snacks has bought Sheffield-based popcorn manufacturer South Yorkshire Foods.

The move brings production of the Perthshire-based snack manufacturer’s popcorn range in-house and secures 60 jobs at the Sheffield site, which uses a traditional method of cooking in large kettles to produces 12 tonnes of popcorn per day.

The acquisition will also see Taylors – formerly known as Mackies at Taypack – take over the production and distribution of South Yorkshire Foods’ ‘Big Night In’ range, a popcorn brand listed in stores including Asda, Iceland and B&M.

Taylors Snacks boss James Taylor said the decision to expand “made sense right away”.

He said: “The new business move will not only add an array of dedicated, talented staff, it will also add to our ever extending range of products.

“By working hard to create a product that customers around the country love, we’re certain that the purchase of South Yorkshire Foods will be a huge success, adding value and quality to our already much-loved snack range.”
