Aldi’s Castle Douglas plans approved

Dumfries and Galloway Council has approved plans for a new Aldi in Castle Douglas despite being advised to reject it due to fears over its town centre impact.

The local authority initially said it wanted to protect the town centre’s “vitality and vibrancy” by turning down Aldi’s Oakwell Road proposals.

However, after a lengthy council meeting, the council agreed to approve the store with a string of conditions.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “As the cost-of-living crisis worsens and affects millions of households across the country, we are confident our now approved proposals will make a positive contribution to the area.

“The new store will reduce shopping miles, provide more choice to the area, improve the affordability of weekly food shopping and will also create up to 35 local jobs and deliver a significant investment of around £6.4m into the local area.”

Aldi hopes the supermarket could be welcoming its first shoppers by the middle of next year.
