Joan Scott-Adie, Life President of CJ Lang & Son, has died on June 15 after a long illness.
Scott-Adie was the granddaughter of Charles Lang Snr, who founded the Dundee-based business in 1919, and the daughter of Stella and Charles Lang. She spent her life continuing the family’s work and vision.
As long-serving chairwoman and majority shareholder, she led the company through a period of significant growth, helping to establish the business as a leading independent food wholesaler and retailer and the Spar wholesale partner for Scotland.
Her husband John, who predeceased her, was closely involved in the business and supported her throughout that period.
She is survived by her four daughters – Fiona, Serena, Caroline and Tanya – who are all shareholders and serve as non-executive directors, continuing the family’s involvement in the company.
A spokesperson for CJ Lang commented: “She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.”
Marking the loss, SGF Chief Executive Pete Cheema, commented: “Joan was a true stalwart and a leading light in the Scottish convenience sector. Her contribution cannot be understated. We are all deeply saddened by the loss, and our thoughts go out to her daughters and family.
“It was a genuine honour and pleasure to work with Joan over many years as a Spar retailer in Meigle. I have very fond memories of Joan and John popping into my store and she will be sorely missed. From everyone at SGF we want to thank Joan for her service and pass our sincerest sympathies to her family at this difficult time.”
