Spar Scotland has awarded a total of £13,000 to two community organisations through its 2026 Community Cashback grant scheme.
The funding has been shared between the Cetacean Research & Rescue Unit (CRRU), which received £10,000, and Missing Pets Dundee & Angus, which was awarded £3,000.
Based in northeast Scotland, CRRU will use the grant to support its marine conservation, research, education and wildlife rescue work. The funding will contribute towards research into minke whale migration patterns in the outer Moray Firth, support evidence gathering for the Southern Trench Marine Protected Area, help provide resources for data collection and analysis, and assist the charity’s 24-hour volunteer marine mammal rescue service.
The charity was established in the late 1990s after founder Dr Robinson identified a need for accessible field training, marine mammal research opportunities and emergency rescue support in northeast Scotland. With no salaried staff, CRRU relies on donations, sponsorship and grant funding to support its operations.
Meanwhile, Missing Pets Dundee & Angus will use its £3,000 grant to help cover the cost of equipment, vehicle maintenance, volunteer fuel expenses and insurance.
The volunteer-run organisation has spent around 13 years helping reunite lost and found pets with their owners across the region.
