Spar, a partner of British Athletics, has named Mike Briggs (pictured), a gymnastics coach from Dumfries, as the overall winner of its People’s Podium Campaign.
The People’s Podium initiative recognises and rewards individuals supporting community sport across the UK. The competition saw hundreds of people nominate individuals involved with incredible sporting projects in their region. Spar rewarded four of the best candidates with £2,000, which will go towards supporting their sports projects.
However, it was Briggs, of the Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club, who was awarded the £10,000 grand prize. Spar recognised the incredible achievement he had accomplished to take the club to new heights and the vaulting ambition of his plans for the future.
Debbie Robinson (pictured), Spar UK Managing Director, said: “Spar is at the heart of the communities it serves, and the People’s Podium campaign has been a brilliant way for us to show our appreciation for the incredible individuals supporting grassroots sport.
“Following a rigorous process Mike stood out not only for the time he has given but his selflessness, ability to work through bureaucracy and overcome barriers simply to help young athletes be the best they can be.
“Participation in sport helps create healthy, happy lives and brings communities together, and we hope that the People’s Podium campaign will encourage more people in the UK to get behind sports projects in their area and ultimately lead to stronger communities.”
