Lost tobacco sales main concern for retailers ahead of display ban

With less than one month to go until the tobacco retail display ban comes into effect, a survey of independent and convenience retailers commissioned by JTI has revealed one in three are concerned about a negative impact on their tobacco sales.

The research finds that 98% of retailers are aware of the date that the display ban comes into effect, however 30% do not expect to have their display ban compliant solution in place until just one or two weeks before the implementation date of 6th April.

Jeremy Blackburn, JTI’s Head of Communications, said: “The display ban represents a significant challenge to retailers and only those who train their staff now on how to manage the category in the new environment will see a smooth transition. Putting best practice in place now is one way to ensure staff are ready for the changes ahead.”

JTI says it is working to reinforce the ‘be prepared’ message, by providing retailers with tips and advice on category management, along with guidance on the new legislation to help them remain compliant. Additionally, the JTI Advance website aims to provide further assistance.
