ACS welcomes new high street taskforce

Busy high street

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has welcomed the government’s announcement of a new cross-departmental taskforce focused on regenerating high streets and supporting economic growth across the UK.

The taskforce is one of three new groups announced by the government, alongside initiatives focused on the cost of living and increasing public control over services such as utilities and transport.

ACS highlighted findings from its 2026 Community Barometer report, which ranked convenience stores among the three local services with the most positive impact on communities, alongside Post Offices and pharmacies. The report also identified convenience stores as the top service for delivering local economic growth.

The trade body has been engaging with government on measures to revitalise high streets and support responsible retailers. ACS said its Stop Rogue Traders campaign has helped raise awareness of businesses operating outside the rules and the impact they can have on town centres.

ACS Chief Executive Ed Woodall said: “Local shops are perfectly placed to deliver good growth across every part of the country. We employ almost half a million people, invest almost a billion pounds a year, and have taken on essential services like access to cash when dedicated branches have closed.

“We look forward to working with the new taskforce on a strategy to revitalise high streets and create communities where people want to live, work and shop.”
