Reverse vending machine manufacturer TOMRA has showcased its R2 model in the UK for the first time.
The multi-feed machine, which lets users pour in a whole bag of containers at once, was on display at the RWM Expo at the NEC, Birmingham (17–18 September).
Launched in Europe in 2024, the TOMRA R2 offers the benefits of multi-feed container returns, with a wall-mounted front unit that minimises its footprint instore. The machine has no batch limit, meaning customers can pour in all their plastic bottles and cans at once and continue shopping.
The TOMRA team demonstrated the R2 and discussed how the company can support retailers ahead of the deposit return scheme (DRS) rollout in England, Wales and Scotland from October 2027.
“As we begin the countdown to a deposit return scheme going live in the UK, we’re keen to ensure retailers feel ready and can explore the opportunities it offers. We want to reassure them that there is a reverse vending solution for all types of retailers and the TOMRA R2 is a great example of this,” said Truls Haug, Vice President, New Markets EMEA for TOMRA Collection.
“It offers a solution for various types of retailers, with a wall-mount format and compact backroom setup. It’s a fantastic option for stores that want to offer their customers a quick and convenient returns experience.”
Data from TOMRA R2 installations across Europe has shown an average increase in container volume of up to 169% and a 55% rise in user sessions.
“Not only does it save valuable floor space and allow store staff to spend more time serving customers and less time handling returns, but it also facilitates an excellent customer experience, driving footfall and loyalty,” said Haug.
TOMRA also showcased its B5 model at the expo – a compact RVM measuring 0.8sqm that can be used as soon as it’s plugged in.
