Scotland shows it class at Bestway Awards

There were three Scottish winners at the 11th Bestway Retailer Development Awards, which were held in London on 11th October. The Awards included Scottish stores for the first time.

The Scottish Retailer of the Year prize was won by Abdul Rashid of Salina Mini Market, Glasgow, who won £3,000 The Runner-up was John McGowan of Icon Stores, Aberdeen, who took home £2,000 for his troubles.

There was also a big win on the night for SLR Award winners Bruce and Donna Morgan, run Brownlies in Edinburgh. The couple picked up the Best-one trophy and £3,000. Meanwhile, Mohammed Issa MBE of 1st Stop 2 Shop in Dundee, Scotland, collected the Community Award along with £1,000 for his valuable work towards the welfare of the local community.

Speaking about the inclusion of Scottish stores for the first time, Bestway’s group chief executive, Zameer Choudrey, described the event as “a celebration of Great Britain’s independents”.

In total twenty-two independent retailers from across the UK shared £43,000 in cash prizes.
