Philip Morris Limited (PML), the UK and Ireland affiliate of Philip Morris International (PMI), has released new research indicating that while smokeless alternatives are already firmly embedded within convenience retail, educating adult smokers on these options will be essential to unlocking further category growth in 2026.
According to a nationwide survey of 200 UK convenience store managers, optimism for the year ahead is strong. Nearly three‑quarters (74%) of retailers expect consumer demand for smoke‑free products to rise in 2026, and 84% of those plan to expand their smokeless ranges to meet this increasing interest.
The research highlights a significant shift in purchasing behaviour as more adult smokers switch away from traditional cigarettes. Retailers identified product choice as the number‑one purchase driver, closely followed by consumer education and lifestyle changes. As the category broadens, the need for clear portfolio guidance and structured ranging strategies becomes increasingly important—particularly given limited shelf space and the growing number of formats and strengths available.
Clear and accessible product information plays a central role in switching behaviour. More than three‑quarters of retailers said they play a crucial role in helping adult smokers transition to smoke‑free alternatives, and a striking 96% reported being asked for product recommendations. This firmly positions retailers at the heart of the UK’s transition toward a smoke‑free future.
PMI encouraged retailers to take advantage of support designed to help guide adult smokers toward the most suitable smoke‑free products by contacting the PMI Open Support Team at retailersupport@iqos.co.uk.
