Spar team raise £50k in mountain climb

Spar team present cheque for £56,766

After a seven-day trek to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, a team from Spar Scotland raised more than £50,000 for Sick Kids Friends Foundation, supporting the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, and Maggie’s Dundee, the charity which provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer, their family and friends.

The team consisted of Susan Hutchison (owner of a Spar store in Scone) and Dundee-based CJ Lang & Son colleagues Graham Murdoch and Jamie Buchanan, and Spar customer John Evans.  The team scaled Africa’s highest mountain after months of gruelling training and meticulous preparation for the freezing temperatures and biting winds.  Money was raised through collection buckets placed in stores throughout Scotland and also via personal donations.

Jamie Buchanan said: “The fantastic work of Maggie’s and Edinburgh Sick Kids inspired us to do something out of the ordinary to raise funds for these terrific charities.  We are completely overwhelmed by the response from our families, friends, colleagues and customers, and to raise over £50,000 gave us that extra motivation to get to the summit.”
