Scottish shoppers embrace easy meals and premium own-label

Scotland’s grocery market grew by 1.7% in the four weeks to 10 August, as inflation eased slightly to 5.0%, according to new figures from Worldpanel by Numerator.

Shoppers continued to favour convenience, with frozen food sales up 3.5%. Frozen fruit and vegetables rose by 17.3%, frozen pizzas by 10.5% and ready meals by 8%. Ice cream also performed well, up 3.1%.

Chilled categories showed similar growth, with overall sales up 4.2%. Chilled ready meals rose by 7.8%, prepared fruit and vegetables by 20.5%, and eggs by 11.9%.

Brands gained ground on own label for the first time since January, growing by 6.6% compared with 1.3%. Premium own-label rose by 8% as shoppers sought restaurant-style options at home. Brands now account for 49% of market value, with own label at 51%.

Sales on promotion fell by 3.5%, making up 24.7% of total value. Online remained the fastest-growing channel, up 14.9%.
