Scottish retailers are being told to check and update their registration details ahead of new legal restrictions on the sale of tobacco and vape products coming into force later this year.
From 29 October 2026, it will be illegal to sell tobacco products, vaping products, herbal smoking products or nicotine products to anyone under 18. The change comes ahead of a wider shift in age restrictions due in 2027.
Retailers are being asked to log into the national register system now, review their business and premises details and make any necessary updates, even if nothing has changed. This is intended to ensure businesses are ready for the next phase of regulation.
Access to the system requires ScotAccount login details. Those who have not used the updated platform since it launched in January 2025 may need to create an account using the same email address as their previous registration and verify their identity.
Once logged in, retailers can update account, company and premises information via the dashboard, as well as download or print their digital certificate.
Businesses can also amend premises details individually, add nicotine vapour sales to an existing listing, or remove sites that are no longer trading.
Retailers who stop selling tobacco or vape products must notify the Scottish Government within three months through the register platform to keep records accurate.
Checks for duplicate registrations can be carried out via the public register, with retailers advised to correct any duplication through their account.
Looking ahead, further changes will come into force on 1 January 2027, when the age of sale for tobacco products, herbal smoking products and cigarette papers will shift so that anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 can never legally be sold these products.
