Retailer ‘absolutely devastated’ as fire hits Rutherglen Nisa

Nisa Rutherglen fire

More than 100 firefighters were on hand to tackle a fire at Nisa Local Wee Mill on Baronald Street in Rutherglen, which started yesterday evening.

No one was harmed, but the incident has left Saj Javed, founder of Pro Gro Group (formerly PGNJ), “absolutely devastated”.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the fire at 6.19pm on Thursday, 7 May. At its height, Operations Control mobilised 22 fire appliances and additional resources to the scene of the fire in the basement of the outlet, which is situated within a four storey tenement building.

Road restrictions in the area remain in place and two fire appliances were still on the scene as of 11:35 this morning.

Saj said: “We are absolutely devastated to lose one of our award-winning stores, Nisa Local Wee Mill, which caught fire yesterday evening. Thankfully no staff or customers were injured and everyone from the building above were evacuated safely. We would like to thank everyone for their support including: emergency services, local customers and our great team of staff at the store.”

The store opened in December 2023 after an investment of nearly £300,000 and won the SLR Awards’ New Store of the Year title in 2024.
