Nestlé recalls SMA baby milk over toxin scare

SMA baby milk

Nestlé has recalled several SMA Infant Formula and Follow‑On Formula products because they may contain the dangerous toxin, cereulide.

Consuming cereulide can lead to the rapid onset of nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

The toxin is highly heat‑stable, meaning it is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, using boiling water or when preparing infant formula.

A list of affected products and relevant batch numbers can be found on the Nestlé website. All other Nestlé products and unaffected batches of the same products are safe to consume.

The company has issued a point‑of‑sale notice that explains to customers why the products are being recalled and sets out what to do if they have bought them.

Shoppers who have any of the affected products should not feed them to babies. Instead, they should submit a photo of the product and the batch code via Nestlé’s website or call its careline on 0800 0 81 81 80 for a refund.

If you have fed this product to a baby and have any concerns about potential health impact, you should seek advice from healthcare professionals via the most appropriate route depending on where you live, e.g. contact your GP or call NHS 111.

“The safety and wellbeing of babies is our absolute priority,” said Nestlé.

“We understand that this news may cause concern for parents, and we sincerely apologise for any concern or inconvenience caused to parents, caregivers and customers.”
