Kids go crazy for clementines

The appeal of the sweet clementine among British youngsters has sent sales soaring according to figures released by the Co-op.

The clementine craze has led to a more than seven-fold increase in sales this year following the introduction of an easy-peeler seedless sweet clem fridge pack.

It is the first year the Co-op has introduced a seedless clem and, it is predicting that the seasonal citrus sensation will be its top-selling fruit line over Christmas, leaving the satsuma in the shade.

Catherine Bellis, the Co-op’s Fruit Buyer, said: “As a mum myself, the easy-peeler seedless sweet clem ticks all the boxes. It is great as a snack or for the lunchbox and, provides a boost of Vitamin C.

“While children tell us that the fridge pack is a ‘cool’ addition to our range, making better use of fridges and freezers in the home can also help food last longer and reduce waste not just at Christmas-time but all year round with potential savings to be made for families of around £200m.”

The Co-op this year announced a £125m investment in lowering the price of everyday essentials, including pruning the price of over 100 lines of fresh fruit and vegetable, as well as the introduction of revolving offers on popular produce, called “fresh three”.

The Co-op easy-peeler seedless sweet clem fridge pack (750g) is priced at £2 during the run-up to and over Christmas.
