Gen Z reshapes cocktail culture

Drinking an Espresso martini

Nearly half of Gen Z Brits now prefer ending a meal with an Espresso Martini cocktail instead of an espresso, according to a new survey by Bacardi. Among 18–29-year-olds, 48% favour the cocktail, compared to just 20% of those aged 45 and over.

The findings come from Bacardi’s seventh annual Cocktail Trends Report, which outlines the key shifts expected to shape global cocktail culture and the spirits industry in 2026.

Gen Z is driving change across the category. Half of respondents aged 18–29 say they celebrate special moments with cocktails rather than champagne, 32% drink more cocktails than wine, and 30% choose cocktails over beer.

The report also highlights Gen Z’s familiarity with cocktail culture. Almost one-third (31%) associate the term ‘Americano’ with a cocktail before coffee – a figure that drops to 9% among older consumers.

The aperitivo occasion is gaining traction in the UK, with 37% of Gen Z and 42% of millennials opting for earlier evenings out. Meanwhile, 47% of respondents say they are going to nightclubs less often.

The shift is reflected in rising demand for lighter, longer serves like the St‑Germain Spritz, which Gen Z ranks as its number one cocktail for 2026.

Ready-to-drink cocktails are also on the rise, with 40% of Gen Z respondents saying they will drink more RTDs next year. The trend aligns with increased interest in casual outdoor gatherings and festivals, with 45% expecting to attend more of both in 2026.
