Retailers Against Crime, in partnership with Police Scotland, held the first Day of Action in Edinburgh City Centre last Tuesday (17 June). Working with local retailers, 14 police officers and more than 20 Loss Prevention personnel patrolled the area for over four hours, targeting and disrupting the activities of prolific retail crime offenders operating in the area.

Over 13 stop and searches were carried out, including seven related to stolen property, and three individuals were charged,

A 40-year-old male was stopped following a shoplifting and the police recovered £400 worth of stolen property. The man was arrested and charged with conditions not to enter the city centre.

A 24-year-old female was also charged with theft following the recovery of £50 worth of stolen goods.

A 49-year-old man was found in possession of drugs, which have been sent for analysis.

Over 30 premises were visited, and three intelligence entries were submitted to the Secure Intelligence Database (SID).

Inspector Gordon Duff said: “Our day of action was supported by key partners at Retailers Against Crime, Essential Edinburgh, BTP, Lothian Buses and the retailers operating within the city centre.

“We want activity like this to send a very clear message that retail crime is being treated as a priority and extensive time and resource is being dedicated to reducing offences and bring those responsible to justice.

“I’m grateful to all of the officers and partners that provided vital assistance, and the public can rest assured further activity will take place as we actively target all of those involved in the various forms of retail crime affecting Edinburgh’s businesses.”

RAC Intelligence Co-ordinator Natasa Wilson said: “Retailers are encouraged to engage and participate in future Days of Action to help protect staff, reduce losses, and create a safer shopping environment for all.”
