Retailers are advised to immediately stop the sale of any whisky or gin produced by Orkney-based Kimbland Distillery.
This follows an urgent public health alert from Food Standards Scotland (FSS) which found the business had been making and selling alcohol without required safety controls and had failed to provide evidence its products meet safety standards.
While distribution appears mainly local to Orkney, FSS has instructed enforcement authorities across Scotland to identify and contact any businesses that could be stocking the affected goods.
Products named in the alert include New Make Spirit of Whisky (all sizes), Sanday Tempest Gin (70cl), Sanday Sunset Gin (70cl), Sanday No.1 Gin (70cl), and any filled barrels and casks originating from the distillery. FSS and local authorities have urged consumers who recognise these items not to drink them under any circumstances and to contact their local trading standards or environmental health team for guidance.
Kimbland Distillery was founded by Sebastian Hadfield‑Hyde in 2017 as a carbon-negative producer of whisky and gin. Speaking to BBC Radio Orkney, Hadfield‑Hyde said he was “furious and upset” by the warning which came “out of the blue”. He claimed his premises had been a building site for the past 18 months, during which time he had not been producing spirits, supplying wholesalers or selling online.
