The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) is encouraging local shops to engage with new statutory guidance that bans the sale of disposable barbecues.
The measures have been introduced in response to extreme temperatures and drought conditions affecting all parts of the UK, with the aim of reducing risks to public safety and the environment.
The government has deemed disposable barbecues to be unsafe products, meaning they should not currently be supplied either in-store or online.
Under the General Product Safety Regulations 2025, retailers and distributors have a legal obligation not to supply products they know, or should know, are dangerous.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards and local authorities have powers to enforce the requirements and can take action against businesses that breach the rules.
The guidance will remain under review as weather conditions change.
ACS Chief Executive Ed Woodall said: “Many local shops have already taken action to remove disposable BBQs from sale and we are working with the government to share this new statutory guidance as widely as possible and support its implementation.”
