Police have reported 39 people to the Procurator Fiscal for 172 crimes in West Lothian as part of an initiative funded by Police Scotland’s Retail Crime Taskforce.
The initiative was launched on Monday 26 May to address the ongoing rise in shoplifting and other crimes taking place within West Lothian stores. Since then, local officers have been conducting high-visibility patrols in various town centres that analysis of crime figures suggest are most adversely affected by retail crime, as well as engaging with retailers to improve security measures on site.
Between 26 May and 2 July, enforcement action was carried out in Livingston, Bathgate, Blackburn, Whitburn, Pumpherston and Armadale following a series of offences that took place at convenience stores in these areas.
Chief Inspector Elaine McArthur-Kerr, Local Area Commander for West Lothian, said: “Shoplifting is not a victimless crime. It impacts businesses, staff, and the wider community. We take this issue seriously and will continue working closely with retailers to reduce these offences and implement preventative measures.”
“The funding and specialist support from the Retail Crime Taskforce demonstrates our commitment to supporting local businesses and ensuring West Lothian remains a safe place to live, work, and shop.
“I also want to make it clear that those responsible for shoplifting, or the harassment and abuse of retail workers will be robustly pursued and brought to justice.”
